The Eames Lounge Chair - Style Vs. Relaxation

Husband and wife designers Charles and Ray Eames, initially designed this fashionable and sophisticated item of lounge set in 1956 as a gift for their very good great friend and director Billy Wilder (‘some like it hot’, Sunset Blvd’). Ever since its arrival, the Eames lounge seat has become known as one of the most modern and snug furniture pieces of all time.

Generally there are aren’t many who wouldn’t recognise this unique modern armchair, as it has emerged on screen a large number of times in sitcoms such as, ‘Friends’ - as Joey and Chandlers’ centre item armchairs, nearly always identified in the program as being way too relaxing to stand up away from and one of which is even given a human name (‘Rosita’). The Eames lounge chair has also appeared on ‘Frasier’, ‘House’, ITV’s lifestyle TV show ’60 minute makeover’ and flicks including, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Mad Men’.

Co-designer Charles, on one occasion reported he wanted the chair to ‘resemble the warmth, familiarity and level of comfort of a well worn baseball mitt’ whilst his wife Ray, desired the chair to possess a ‘comfortable and un-designy look’. It's easy to view from the chair’s overall appearance that this is exactly what the completed design portrays. Its bucket seating style and design and elevated reverse leaning position immediately implies extravagant and is related to the baseball mitt figure, together with the sleek black Italian leather material seating and veneer grain surface finish resembling both the material and shade of a baseball mitt and oozing with relaxation.

This particular Eames inspired lounge chair also comes complete with coordinating ottoman, that's small enough not to clutter any sort of lounge, dining or office environment location, yet large enough for anyone of any height, to sit back and appreciate maximum comfort and relaxation. The chair’s natural colour selection including black, brown and white leather and different shades wood grain, enables the furniture piece to mix adequately with any colour scheme or design. What really make the Eames lounge chair so special and rare, is its ability to provide a high level of both style and comfort, as proven in the range of various big screen appearances.

Just like most traditional items of furniture the Eames lounge chair would be an investment for any buyer, through its ability to retain its style and fantastic comfort for years on end. Togther both chair and ottoman are hand assembled and created with extraordinary attention to detail. The lounge chair’s cushions are also individually upholstered and replaceable and the back cushions also are interchangeable, enabling those who aren’t into the ‘leather look’ to change the seating to any material or colour of their choice. Continuing to tick all the boxes, the Eames lounge chair is also environmentally friendly, as more recently manufactured modules are created with a richly grained veneer labeled as ‘Santos Palisander’, rather than the initial endangered Brazilian Rosewood.

Furthering the Eames collection’s high profile status, the New York Museum of Modern Art have added the lounge chair set as part of their permanent collection describing the Eames furniture set as, ‘the most iconic of all modern chair sets’. The set can also be seen on a permanent display at the Art institute of Chicago. It is clear that purchasing the Eames Inspired Collection is like obtaining a piece of history, a talking piece for any house hold or office and most importantly of all, a piece of furniture offering magnificent style and laid back comfort. A must have for anyone seeking luxury style, comfort and relaxation!
